ingrown toenail
toenail infection in human

Sometimes the side edge of the toenail grows into the skin tissue which is around it. It is quite a common problem, and according to stats, around 18% of people (adults) in the US experience the issue at least once in their lives. It is better to treat the odd-looking ingrown toenail instantly so you can avoid problems in the future like infections and painful toes.

We have gathered 9 effective ways to fix ingrown toenails (which are proven, of course) to get rid of these odd-looking painful problems.

1.     Epsom salt and warm water

You can soak your feet in the warm water and get rid of many issues like stress. Add some Epsom salt in the warm water, and it will help to reduce soreness and helps to fix ingrown toenails. It will also make nails softer so you can cut them later. Here is how you can do that:

  • Take 2 tbsp of Epsom salt in a foot tub.
  • Add warm water and hold your feet in it for around twenty minutes.
  • Soak your feet at least thrice a day to get the best results.

2.     Apple cider Vinegar:

Apple cider vinegar is an excellent antiseptic and contains anti-inflammatory qualities. The vinegar helps to prevent any infections and also provides relief from sore feet and swollen skin. Here is how you can use apple vinegar for your feet

  • Take a cotton ball and soak it in apple vinegar.
  • Afterward, cover the toe with a bandage and leave it for two hours.
  • Afterward, dry the affected nail completely.

3.     Use turmeric Paste

Turmeric is well known anti-inflammatory agent that also offers pain-relieving benefits. It helps reduce swelling on the feet and any pain you get from the ingrown nail of the toe. Here is how to use it:

  • Take half a teaspoon of turmeric powder and mix it with an equal amount of mustard oil.
  • Then cover the toenail with paste and put a bandage on it
  • Leave it as it is for an hour, and then remove it.
  • You can repeat the process twice or thrice a day to relieve pain.

4.     Use honey & lemon juice:

Honey and lemon contain an antimicrobial effect on the skin. Both ingredients include an antimicrobial impact on the skin. The ingredients help to resist any infection caused by ingrown toenails. Here is how to use it:

  • Take lemon juice and honey, and then put them right on the toe.
  • Take a bandage and cover it overnight.
  • Repeat the process every night until the toe gets better.

5.     Raise nail with cotton wedge

You can keep your nails sharp and raises by keeping a cotton wedge under the toenail. Here is how you can do it.

  • Lift the affected nail carefully with the help of tweezers.
  • Put cotton piece (small) between the skin and the toenail.
  • Change the cotton wedge often. Particularly when you soak feet in the bathtub

6.     Use dental floss to lift the nail:

The trick works best when you apply water-soaking feet in the foot tub. It will cause your skin to get softer along with the nail. Here is how to do it:

  • Lift the toenail carefully by using waxed and clean dental floss.
  • Do not dig into it a lot.
  • You can repeat the process every time after soaking your feet in the water.

7.     Correctly trim the toenails:

An ingrown toenail is a common issue, but you can avoid its repeated occurrence by trimming nails correctly and regularly. Here is how to do it

  • Start trimming nails from edges, not from a central area.
  • When edges are smooth, there are few chances of getting an ingrown toenail.
  • Avoid sharp edges at any cost.
  • Do not cut edges or nails entirely too short, as they will grow into the skin more.
  • Trim nails at least every two to three weeks.

8.     Pay attention to the shoes:

Always wear comfortable shoes that do not hurt toes and offer them extra space. For instance, wear open shoes and sandals. You can wear cover shoes with soft fabric that allows the toes to breathe. Tight shoes, uneasy sandals, and footwear are also significant reasons for toenails growing into the skin. High heels also add pressure to toes, so do not consider them an ideal choice.

9.     Visit the doctor:

If you are trying these tricks and nothing works in a week, see a doctor. He will prescribe you antibiotics and treat the ingrown toe properly. But if your case is not simple and there are lots of pains and swallowing, then that means you can go to see a podiatrist.
